Did Green Day steal "21 Guns" from Avril Lavigne?
Green Day's newest single 21 Guns, sounds very uncomfortably familiar to Avril Lavigne's multi-platinum hit song, "Complicated", and it's only a matter of time before her publishing company and former label, Arista, begin to take notice. The similarity is so blatant, that you can actually play the two songs at the same time and hear the same exact chord progression and rhythm.
What was Green Day thinking!? It would be a tragedy to see such an iconic rock band, get involved in a career damaging copyright lawsuit.

Actually, there's no issue with this. That's a ridiculously commonly used progression.
If you actually look into what can be copyrighted on a song, you'll find that only melodies, lyrics, and sound recordings can be copyrighted. Thus, no infringement.

Personally I think it is coincidence, but I did think it was interesting to check out this theory. But it really bothered me when everyone seemed to be going after Avril for the same offence, But I never believed Avril was ever guilty of any wrong doing.

If you have ever been in the process of song writing, you'd know that melodies comes from subconcious inspiration…plagiarism is really hard to avoid but as long as it has a unique feature…it is a different song…

There are only a certain number of chords and notes - and they don't belong to anyone. All art builds off other art. People have completed left the original intent of copyright, now it just hurts new artists and inventors.

Besides, if it WAS copyrighted, and Avril was going to file a lawsuit, wouldn't she have done it already? The albums been out for two months, and 21 Guns was their third single. Don't you think they would've picked a song that WASN'T copyrighted (if it was) to make a single, because they're all over MTV, the radio, etc.
ALSO, I agree with Scott (above). The music industry needs to chill the fuck out, and there's only a certain number of chords and rythms.

It is just a chord progression. Loads of bands use it.
Classic example, check out Green Day's Basket Case. That chord progression is so common in todays music, its a very popular progression.
I can garuntee that no lawsuit is going to happen over that. Its just ridiculous.

Oh, wow, "Complicated!" This brings me back. I miss when Avril Lavigne wore ties. Okay. Well, I like Green Day. I also like Avril Lavigne. So here's hoping I'm a little more on the fence.
It's similar. Yeah, it's true. However, since A) Billie Joe Armstrong has been writing since Avril was crawling on her mother's carpet and B) He thinks she sucks (no lie, look it up, he thinks she sucks, told her to go cover "some of your boyfriend's songs") I highly doubt he stole it from her. And if he ever finds out the similarity, the poor guy might cry in the shower wondering where his talent went that he now writes like Avril Lavigne (not my view, just what I think his might be).
While we're on the subject on similar chord progression, anyone ever notice Avril's "I Don't Give" has some common chords with R.E.M.'s "Losing My Religion"? Try it. It's obvious by the first ten seconds. And lets not forget the Rubinoos (sp?), who she stole "Girlfriend" from and paid off.
And, I'm sorry, but I have to say this. Avril's not a better musician thn Billie Joe Armstrong. She's not a better act than Green Day. She can't SING better than him. I've heard her cover of "Basket Case." I've heard "American Idiot."
They. Weren't. Good. Simple as that. In fact, I almost hit my head on the desk just listening to it. She can't sing songs done by males. Not sure why, it's just a fact.
And she didn't write "Complicated." The Matrix did and slapped her name on it so they could say she's "original" and "writes her own stuff". I can accept it now. I couldn't when I was ten.

WOW, i mean in some ways pissed(1st comment) and X-17 are right but come on now in the 21st century sssoo many songs have been written that lots of songs are going to have parts that are like other songs. it wouldn't make sense if no song made, didn't sound like any other one. reality is, however, is that this was all started by a record company or somebody else that just wants to make a lot of money. come on, get a life, go out and do something thats fun. why should any of u care if this, that, and the other song sounds the same, and that goes to the people that started this whole thing, too.personaly i like the 21 guns song, but thats just the way it is now and as long as songs are being written, how it will always be.

The song is sampled but not from Avril, its Electric Light Orchestra's Telephone Line that seems is gonna have a chance to sue Green Day. I love the 21 Guns but Green Day didn't seem to have gotten permission to use the sample.
